A Sanctuary for the Forgotten, the Rare, and the Restless.
The Uncommon Bookshop is not your typical storefront. Located in the quiet, pine-shadowed reaches of Northern Florida, it occupies the ground floor of an old building where the floorboards groan under the weight of thousands of stories.
Upstairs is where I live. Downstairs is where the objects live.
Why the Door is Locked
You may notice the “Closed” sign is permanently flipped. This isn’t because we are empty, but because we are selective. The Uncommon Bookshop is a private archive, a staging ground for vintage books, rare CDs, and curiosities that have been rescued from estate sales, forgotten attics, and midnight deliveries.
While the physical door remains locked to the general public for now, the Digital Ledger is always open. Every item you see listed on our eBay and Mercari shops has been hand-inspected, cleaned, and “vetted” by the keeper of the shop. We believe that objects choose their owners, and our job is simply to facilitate the meeting.
The Shopkeeper’s Log: Your Morning Dispatch
Every morning, usually before the sun has fully burned off the Florida haze, I sit at my desk with a heavy mug of coffee to write the Shopkeeper’s Log.
This isn’t a corporate blog or a list of sales. It is a daily record of the life inside these walls. When you read the Log, you are stepping into the shop’s private world:
- The Discoveries: The notes found in the margins of 19th-century poetry books.
- The Atmosphere: The way the shop reacts to a hard freeze or a summer storm.
- The Inventory: A first look at items before they hit the Ledger.
- The Neighbors: Occasional mentions of fellow dreamers and creators, like the celestial world of Fennlight.
Meet the Sentinel: Hughey
The shop is officially managed by Hughey, a thirteen-year-old, three-legged Apricot Poodle. He is a rare color for a poodle, and a rare soul for a dog. He is the official greeter of the morning haze and the guardian of the radiator. If an item has made it onto the site, you can be sure it has been sniffed and approved by Hughey.
The Rhythm of the Shop
We operate on a “Sunrise to Sunset” philosophy:
- The Morning Log: Posted daily. It’s the story of the day’s start and the treasures found.
- The Ledger Updates: New items are added to our eBay and Mercari shops throughout the week as they are cataloged.
- The End of Day: A short evening reflection to “tuck the shop in” and flip the virtual sign to dark.
Our Mission
We believe in the Uncommon. In an era of mass production, we look for the “scars” the signed pages, the rare pressing, the ephemera that tells a human story. We aren’t just selling “used goods”; we are ensuring that history doesn’t end up in a landfill.
Thank you for being part of this story. Pull up a chair, stay for the log, and if an object speaks to you, we’ll be happy to send it your way.
[The End of Day]
This is a recurring section found at the bottom of our daily posts.
When the shadows grow long across the shop floor, the work doesn’t stop, but it changes. The “End of Day” is my time to reflect on what was accomplished, what remains a mystery, and to ensure Hughey is fed and the kettle is off. It is the final “Goodnight” from the shop to the world.
